Ricky Tomlinson blasts government for not helping workers who have lost out during lockdown

Ricky Tomlinson delivered a blistering speech at a demonstration highlighting the plight of those who have not been offered financial support during the pandemic.

Hundreds of people gathered in Derby Square today ( Saturday) to support an event calling on Chancellor Rishi Sunak to offer some assistance to the millions of workers who have not received any financial help since the country went into lockdown last year.

Today's event was organised by lobby group Excluded Unity Alliance, which was set up to highlight the plight of workers who have failed to qualify for support from the government during lockdown.

Mr Tomlinson, star The Royle Family, accused the government of not caring about ordinary people who had struggled during the pandemic. Mr Tomlinson cited the case of young people who "did not have a carrot" between them.

He said: "We will show them comedians in Downing Street, Boris the buffoon, that is only the start of it."

Ellie Phillips, who grew up in Liverpool, attended today's demonstration. Speaking to the ECHO after the event she said: "The government's policy does not make sense.

"How can they offer support to one group of tax payers but then exclude another group of taxpayers just because they get paid in a different way.

"I am a freelance presenter and journalist and I know how hard it has been during the pandemic. But today is about the millions of workers across the self-employed sector , everyone from teachers to people who work for the NHS on a freelance basis.

"It's also about the many people have just been forgotten and ignored over the last year. Those who are relying on foodbanks to feed their children."

Local MPs Kim Johnson and Bill Esterson both attended, along with Metro Mayor Steve Rotherham.
