Ricky Tomlinson and friends sing cover of Ken Dodd's Happiness to raise money for the NHS

The Royle Family star Ricky Tomlinson has emulated Madonna by singing a tribute for the NHS from his bathtub.

The actor and comedian has taken part in a tribute cover of Sir Ken Dodd’s hit Happiness for the NHS, with stars such as Glenda Jackson, Rick Astley and Jimmy Tarbuck also taking part.

Tomlinson appears in the bathtub for his section, wearing nothing but a shower cap.

Referencing Madonna’s bizarre coronavirus bathroom video, Tomlinson told BBC News: "We saw Madonna in her bath having a go, so we thought it's time we did an authentic Scouse song to get the nation smiling again and say a huge thank you to all our amazing NHS staff."

The video, which also features Shirley Ballas, Claire Sweeney, Les Dennis and Carol Decker, changes the lyrics of Dodd’s song to praise the NHS as “the greatest gift that we possess”.

The video cover was organised and shared by The Ken Dodd Charitable Foundation with The Comedy Trust and Liverpool's Royal Court.

The organisations have asked people to donate to NHS Charities Together.

Sir Ken's widow, Lady Anne Dodd, told BBC News: "Ken would have loved the idea of cheering up everyone across the nation by singing together his Happiness song.

"We all need more laughter and joy in our lives, and we hope Happiness can bring a smile to the world."
