Ricky Martin has spoken of his support for US Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden and called out fellow Latinos supporting Donald Trump.
The pop star, who previously introduced Biden at an event in Florida where he commemorated the victims of the Pulse nightclub attack, explained his voting choice in a forthcoming interview with Variety.
“I think he is the only option we have,” he said. “He is great and he has been in politics all his life. This is the moment. We all need to get together and be loud about the course of this nation.”
Martin said that he could not imagine voting for Trump, as a Latino, a gay man, and as someone “married to an Arab” (his husband is Syrian painter Jwan Yosef).
He added that witnessing fellow Latinos support Trump was “scary”. Trump received 28 per cent of the Latino vote in 2016, with NBC predicting 30 per cent this year.
“It is super sad,” he said, adding, “Trumpeters make a lot of noise. And it’s scary to see their enthusiasm but us, we’re doing what’s right, the right way and we’ll see what happens in November.”
Martin then said that he was optimistic about Biden’s chances of securing a US presidency.
“I think when you have 50 million people voting already, it’s because we are not the only ones concerned about this and for that I am extremely happy,” he said.
