Ricky Hatton praises Tyson Fury for helping him get through a tough time during lockdown

Ricky Hatton has hailed ‘good friend’ Tyson Fury as the person who helped him at his lowest ebb during lockdown.

The former light welterweight and welterweight world champion opened up about how a bereavement in his family led to him to start feeling “a bit down”.

Lockdown made it impossible for the Hitman to comfort his loved ones at the time, but the Gypsy King came to his rescue after he wrote a post on Instagram.

Two-time heavyweight world champion Tyson has spoken in depth about his own mental health, including his struggle with depression.

Ricky, who was speaking on GMB about how he is coping during lockdown, said Tyson was on the phone within minutes.

He told Piers Morgan and Susanna reid: “I’ve been a friend of Tyson for years. I had a death in the family which is very upsetting because you want to be there for your family when things like this happen.

“But because of the lockdown I wasn’t able to do this, give support to my loved ones.

“It got me down a bit so I posted on my Instagram and within two minutes the phone went and it was Tyson.

“Hey Ricky, how are you doing, what’s up? That’s what you need, you need good friends around you, good people, and Tyson is certainly one of them,”

Father-of-three Ricky went on to reveal he has lost a stone in weight during lockdown thanks to his rigorous exercise regime.

He said: “The best thing that has helped me get through it has been my own work and exercise and my training.

“I have been very fortunate, I have lost about a stone in weight believe it or not. I am still a little bit on the chubby side but it’s been very good for me in that perspective.

“It gives you a lot of time to reflect. I have been very fortunate to see my girls who are eight and seven years old a couple of times a week, so I have not been completely alone.”

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV.
