Ricky Gervais rules out return to Golden Globes hosting duties next year

Ricky Gervais is set to disappoint his fans as he categorically ruled out hosting next year's Golden Globes.

The comedian-turned-actor gave a typical Ricky Gervais response when a fan on social media questioned whether he could be tempted to host the ceremony once again following his epic stint in 2020.

The fan on Twitter shared a clip of Ricky, 61, hosting the awards night in Hollywood two years ago and asked their followers to retweet it "if you wish [Gervais] would host the Golden Globes again in 2023."

Unfortunately, Ricky himself quickly poured cold water on the potential gig, simply quote tweeting the user and responding: "F*** that," alongside a laughing emoji.

Fans were quick to praise him for his previous efforts, with some claiming he was the "best host they ever had".

One user pleaded: "The only reason I would ever consider watching that yawn fest of an event would be for that very reason. So, one more time please, Mr. Gervais! The Golden Globes need you, even though their participants might not see it that way."

Another added: "This clip never gets old. I won't watch any awards show that Ricky Gervais isn't hosting. It's a pointless exercise in mutual ego-stroking otherwise."

And a third said: "As if they could take another round…."

In 2021, Ricky explained his reasoning for his savage roasting of some of the biggest names in showbiz during his seven-minute skit. He told the Guardian : "Do I pander to the 200 billionaires in the room or the 200 million people at home sitting in their [underwear] drinking beer who aren’t winning awards, who aren’t billionaires?

"It’s a no-brainer for a comedian. I’m a jester. I play to the other peasants in the mud."

Ricky's latest apparent confirmation comes as the Hollywood Foreign Press is set to return to televise the event. The 2022 edition was reduced to a press release after a huge backlash for their lack of diversity.

The Chairman of Entertainment Networks at NBCUniversal Television and Streaming, Frances Berwick, said of the decision: "We recognize the HFPA’s commitment to ongoing change and look forward to welcoming back the Golden Globes to NBC for its landmark 80th Anniversary in January 2023."

Nominations for the ceremony will be announced on December 12, with the show set to take place a few weeks later on January 10.
