Ricky Gervais has revealed he is already working on the third season of After Life, having completed the script for the first episode.

The comedian shared the news on social media on Thursday, July 23, sharing a photo presumably from his London home.

With his stacked shelf of awards appearing not-so-humbly behind him, Gervais posed in the photo with the fresh script.

“Cheers,” Gervais wrote, adding an emoji of clinking champagne glasses.

In a follow-up tweet, Gervais confirmed he had just written the first episode for now, and that the rest were “getting there”.

He later joked: “Just wrote a joke for Brian Gittins to tell in #AfterLife3. It’s so good I’m counting it as a day’s work.”

The second season of After Life premiered on April 24, 2020. The show was renewed for a third season by Netflix in May.

The show’s renewal was part of a larger deal between Gervais and Netflix that will see the comedian creating other scripted shows and performing stand-up specials.

Set in the fictional town of Tambury, After Life stars Gervais as a journalist who loses his wife unexpectedly to cancer.

A TV insider recently revealed that Netflix may have also asked Gervais to pen a Christmas special for the streaming service.

“There is such a huge appetite for After Life and it’s got a massive fan base,” the insider told The Sun.

"The third series won’t air until 2021 so there is a meeting in the diary to see if Ricky could create the Christmas special.

“It would just be a stand-alone episode, possibly one hour if Ricky thinks it would work."
