Ricky Gervais reacts as NTA viewers rage that After Life was beaten by Mrs Brown's Boys

Fans were outraged on Tuesday night when Ricky Gervais failed to pick up a National Television Award for his show After Life.

The Netflix original was pipped to the post by Mrs Brown's Boys to the best comedy award at the star-studded ITV awards ceremony.

But Ricky has been gracious in defeat and kept up his comedic humour on Twitter.

He tweeted alongside a photo of the After Life team: "What a f***** bunch of losers. Congratulations to Mrs Brown's Boys. Democracy always wins.

"Be nice in defeat and know that you are still the best fans in the world. Thanks to everyone who voted #AfterLife #NTAs."

Mrs Brown's Boys leading star Brendan O'Carroll picked up the award alongside the rest of the BBC shows cast on Tuesday night.

He himself praised Ricky in his speech and the other shows in the category.

"So many wonderful, wonderful stars," Brendan began. "To be in such a category with Derry Girls, Sex Education, the beautifully written and wonderfully performed After Life…

"Ricky, I think it's one of the best things I've ever seen. Ricky, you’re fantastic. It's amazing."

Mrs Brown's Boys win best comedy award at NTAs 2020

But some viewers were left really unimpressed by the results.

"Mrs Brown's Boys beating After Life to win the best comedy award at the National Television Awards is a metaphor of Britain’s decision making right now," said one.

Another added: "Mrs Browns boys - you have to be kidding me! Ricky Gervais was robbed! #Afterlife #NTAs."

"Mrs. Brown's Boys winning the Comedy award is a prime example why people in the UK shouldn't be trusted when voting," commented a third.

Another brutal swipe read: "It was really sweet that they all went on stage and accepted the award as if they deserved to win it."

Better vote next time, maybe?
