Ricky Gervais' most scathing celeb digs as he returns for final Golden Globes gig

"Do people not realise that when they say they are offended by a joke it makes that joke even funnier for the rest of us?" comedian Ricky Gervais once asked on Twitter .

The 58-year-old has presented the Golden Globes four times, and prides himself on his risky and scathing digs on celebrities.

No one is safe from Ricky's sharp tongue, with famous faces including Caitlyn Jenner , Jennifer Lawrence and Charlie Sheen feeling the sting of his wit over the years.

As he gears up for his fifth and final presenting slot on the 77th annual awards, we take a look at some of best and/or most offensive digs.

In 2016, Ricky alluded to the then newly-transitioned Caitlyn Jenner's deadly car accident when she crashed into the back of a woman's car and killed her.

"I'm gonna be nice tonight — I've changed," said Ricky.

"Not as much as Bruce Jenner, obviously. Now Caitlyn Jenner, of course.

"What a year she's had. She became a role model for trans people everywhere, showing great bravery in breaking down barriers and destroying stereotypes.

"She didn't do a lot for women drivers. But, you can't have everything; not at the same time."

Later on, Ricky directed his attention to Jennifer Lawrence, who had written an essay demanding equal pay for women in Hollywood.

“Jennifer Lawrence made the news when she demanded equal pay for women in Hollywood", he began.

"She received overwhelming support from people everywhere. There were marches on the street with nurses and factory workers saying, ‘How the hell can a 25-year-old live on $52 million?!'”

When introducing Kevin Hart and Ken Jeong to the stage, Ricky raised eyebrows when he joked about Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's adopted brood.

“When Brad and Angelina see our next two adorable little presenters, they’re going to want to adopt them", he said.

In 2010, Ricky poked fun at Mel Gibson, who has dealt with alcohol abuse.

He said: “I like a drink as much as the next man. Unless the next man is Mel Gibson.”

Later on he took a swipe at Hollywood's eternally youthful rich and famous, quipping: “Looking at all the wonderful faces here today reminds me of the great work that’s been done this year – by cosmetic surgeons.”

He went on to say: “The Golden Globes... doesn’t just celebrate talent, it celebrates difference.

It crushes prejudice and stereotype. One stereotype I hate is that all Irishmen are just drunk, sweary hell-raisers. Please welcome Colin Farrell .”

And in 2011, Ricky alluded to the rumours that have circulated Scientologist Tom Cruise throughout his career, that he is secretly gay.

“I Love You Phillip Morris: two heterosexual actors pretending to be gay", he began.

"So the complete opposite of some famous Scientologists, then. Probably."

He added: "My lawyers helped me with the wording of that joke.”

He also took aim at the stars of Sex and the City 2, which included Sarah Jessica Parker and Kim Cattral.

“There were a lot of big films that didn’t get nominated this year.

"Nothing for Sex and the City 2.

"I was sure the Golden Globe for special effects would go to the team that airbrushed that poster", said Ricky.

And after discussing TV show The Walking Dead, Ricky added: “Speaking of the walking dead, congratulations to Hugh Hefner, who’s getting married at the age of 84 to 24-year-old beauty Crystal Harris.

"When she was asked why she was marrying him, she said it was because he’d lied about his age. He told her he was 94…"

He advised her: "Just don’t look at him when you touch him.”

Ricky also remarked on Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp's movie The Tourist, after discussing the rise of 3D technology in films.

“It seems like everything this year was three-dimensional", he said.

"Except the characters in The Tourist.”

And finally, he threw shade at the multi-millionaire diva Jennifer Lopez, who once released Jenny From The Block, where she sang about still being down to earth despite her riches and fame.

"She's just Jenny from the block — if the block is that one on Rodeo Drive, right between Cartier and Prada", he quipped.

Ricky will return to the Golden Globes on January 5th, for his final hosting gig.

In a statement, he said: “Once again, they’ve made me an offer I can’t refuse. But this is the very last time I’m doing this, which could make for a fun evening."
