Ricky Gervais hints at third series of After Life following overwhelming response from fans

Ricky Gervais revealed there will be a third series of After Life after being struck by the emotional response he has received from fans.

The second series of his comedy-drama returned to Netflix on Friday and the 58-year-old has been inundated with goodwill after it was positively received.

Ricky usually insists on a maximum two series of a show - but fans and have critics have urged him to agree to a third season of After Life, reports MirrorOnline.

Hosting a Twitter livestream on Sunday evening, Ricky revealed he would be interested in revisiting the characters but feared he may let fans down.

Ricky Gervais has indicated there could be another series of After Life (Natalie Seery/Netflix/PA Wire)

He said: "I'd love to do a season three, it looks like it's going to go down a storm, so if this reaction carries on then yes."

"The better it goes down the worst it is for me, you can do something f***ing amazing, and everyone goes: 'Oh god, it's the best thing ever, 10/10.

"But if you do something else that is 9.5/10 people are like: 'It's f***ing awful, this is the worst show on television', so that's what goes through my mind."

If there is another series, Ricky did confirm one aspect that won't change. He promised main character Tony will not see his beloved dog killed off.

Ricky has often shared his passion for dogs and he insisted: "The dog does not die. Never."

The Office star's portrayal of Tony, a suicidal widower grieving for his beloved wife, has touched the hearts of many viewers.

The show tells of the plight of a man who has lost all direction and purpose in life - and it has certainly struck a chord.

Speaking to the Sunday People before the release of After Life’s second series, Ricky said: “People came up to me in the street after series one.

“I got so many letters. They were like, ‘I’ve felt like that'.

“I was much more aware from the audience’s reaction to it. What they related to was how people coped with grief.”
