Ricky Gervais has a cheeky dig at National Television Awards' host Joel Dommett

If Ricky Gervais gets on an awards ceremony stage, everyone has to take cover.

The comedian, 60, has form for calling people out when it comes to delivering speeches.

And he didn't disappoint on Thursday night and host Joel Dommett was his target this time after he joked that the show was running on too long.

Accepting the award for Best Comedy for After Life, Ricky said: "Wow. Thank you so much. I'll keep this short. It's already interminable."

He went on to thank the support of Netflix, the crew and cast of the sitcom as well as all the voters.

Talking about people who watch the show, he joked: "You're the reason I do this...the money. You're the second...I do it for the money and thank you."

The star beat off competition from Friday Night Dinner, Sex Education and The Vicar of Dibley to win the award.

The series sees Ricky play a man who contemplates suicide after his wife dies of breast cancer. Kerry Godliman plays the role of his wife, Lisa, who appears in visions and flashbacks.

The comedian later took to Twitter to again express his gratitude to all those who voted for him to win the award, confessing he was drunk as he joined the mass of celebs necking drinks at the show's after party.

Alongside an image of him holding a wine glass and pulling a funny face he wrote: "A genuine Thank You to everyone who voted for #AfterLife to win Best Comedy at The National TV Awards.

"Particularly all the dogs & cats. I love you all. I’m drunk. Cheers!"

Earlier in the day Ricky felt compelled to reply after a Twitter user branded him “dismissive and arrogant” after his NTA comments.

The After Life star and Piers Morgan exchanged tweets after the personal asked Ricky to accept his award for him if he won.

The comedian said he didn't know if he'd be able to muster up enough energy to accept his own award if he was to win.

But his joke wasn't quite understood by the user who said he should “get off his high horse”.

They wrote: “Little arrogant and dismissive dont you think?(sic)

“People are voting for you, cop on and get off your high horse. I am a fan but this is very disrespectful."

Ricky quickly responded to the user, saying: "“I simply meant I'm fat and old and tired Andre.

"It was a bit of a joke. Thanks for being a fan. You obviously love comedy.”

Piers obviously found the interaction hilarious and responded with a number of laughing face emojis.
