Ricky Gervais begins Golden Globes by slating Prince Andrew, James Corden - and the Pope

Ricky Gervais began his hosting gig at the Golden Globes by reminding the guests this was his last time hosting - and he didn't care any more - so expect him to be even more savage than usual.

Hollywood had been braced for the controversial comedian's return and he did not disappoint, with his opening monologue being met with a series of gasps.

And he did not disappoint - he began by joking that he drove a limo to the event, and his licence plate was made by Felicity Huffman - the actress who landed in big trouble when she paid for her daughter to get into a prestigious college.

"It's her daughter I feel bad for", he added.

"Must have been the most embarrassing thing thats ever happened to her - and her dad was in Wild Hogs."

He then raised eyebrows when he said it had been a big year for "paedophile movies".

"Surviving R Kelly... Leaving Neverland... The Two Popes", he added.

Talking about a TV series character, he said: "In the end he didn't kill himself, just like Jeffrey Epstein."

He then took aim at Leonardo DiCaprio's penchant for younger women.

He joked that Leo attended the premiere for Once Upon A Time... In Hollywood , and "by the end of it his date was too old for him".

Amid laughter from the star-studded audience, Gervais added: "Even Prince Andrew is like, 'come on Leo mate, you're nearly 50, son'."

Next in the line of fire was James Corden, who starred in the critically-panned CATS movie.

The world got to see James Corden as a fat p***y", said Ricky.

"And he was also in CATS."

The comedian then made a lewd joke about Corden's Cats co-star Dame Judi Dench.

She defended the film, Gervais said, because "it was the role she was born to play".

"I can't do this one," Gervais sniggered, before delivering the punchline.

"Because she loves nothing better than plonking herself down on the carpet... and licking her own m***e."

He then made a gagging sound, adding "fur balls" - and Tom Hanks' reaction was priceless.

Gervais also told the audience of actors and actresses that they had spent less time in school than climate change activist Greta Thunberg.

Speaking of climate change - Russell Crowe had a message regarding the climate crisis upon his win or Best Actor in a Limited Series or TV Movie.

He spoke about the Australian wildfires, and his message was read out by Jennifer Anniston.

It said: "Make no mistake, the tragedy unfolding in Australia is climate change based.

"We need to act based on science, move our global workforce to global energy and respect out planet for the unique and amazing place it is.

"That way, we all have a future."
