Ricketts, Kilgallon, Duberry - What happened to Leeds United's first XI following Premier League relegation

It's approaching 16 years since Leeds United last dined at the top table of English football.

The Whites were relegated in May 2004 after 14 consecutive seasons in the top flight.

That first season back in the second tier quickly became a nightmare, with the club meandering to an uninspiring 14th placed finish in the Championship.

They did at least get the season off to a decent start. The Whites beat Derby County 1-0 at Elland Road, in front of more than 30,000.

So, what became of the players that started the club's journey back in the EFL?

Here, we run the rule over the 11 players who started that game against the Rams on August 7, 2004.

Neil Sullivan

Hugely experienced goalkeeper arrived as one of a raft of summer signings as the club aimed to tackle the challenge of the Championship.

Was number one for two seasons before being loaned out to Doncaster and then eventually joining them permanently.

Now back at Leeds as the academy goalkeeper coach.

Gary Kelly

A one-club man, Kelly made more than 500 appearances for his beloved Leeds.

This particular season saw him play 43 times in the league - a rare consistency during a topsy-turvy time at the club. Hung up his boots in 2007.

Paul Butler

Signed on a free from Wolves and was made skipper shortly afterwards.

Butler would go on to play over 100 games for the Whites before falling out of favour under Dennis Wise.

He left to join MK Dons and Chester before retiring.

Michael Duberry

A notable big-money signing from Chelsea in 1999, Duberry started in defence for Leeds but would go on to make just four appearances this season.

Was allowed to join Stoke and also went on to play for Reading, Wycombe and Oxford. Retired in 2013.

Matt Kilgallon

Academy product played 26 times in this difficult first season out of the top flight.

Stayed at Leeds until 2006 when Sheffield United signed him for a seven-figure fee. Now 36, he is currently playing in India for Hyderabad FC.

Frazer Richardson

The first man to score for Leeds after their Premier League relegation.

Richardson would go on to be a regular for the Whites before leaving on a free for Charlton in 2009.

Finished his career at Doncaster.

Jermaine Wright

Cousin of Ian Wright, Jermaine arrived post-Premier League on a free from Ipswich.

Spent just two years at Elland Road and was loaned to Millwall and Southampton before seeing his contract terminated early.

Simon Walton

Came through the Thorp Arch ranks and made his debut in this match against Derby.

Struggled for game time at Leeds and was eventually sold to Charlton for £500k in 2006.

Danny Pugh

Kevin Blackwell's first signing, Pugh arrived as part of the Alan Smith transfer to Man United in the summer of 2004.

Played 38 times that season before leaving in 2006. Enjoyed a second spell at United from 2011 to 2014.

Michael Ricketts

Has there ever been a less worthy candidate for the number ten shirt?

Arrived on a free from Middlesbrough but never scored a league goal for the Whites.

The one-time England man was loaned out three times by Leeds and joined Southend upon his release.

Julian Joachim

Another past his best when he arrived at the club.

Joachim, who had plenty of top flight nous with Leicester, Coventry and Aston Villa, scored just twice in a Leeds shirt.

Joined Boston after leaving West Yorkshire and was still playing well into his mid-40s albeit in non-league.
