Rick Spielman’s wife doesn’t want him to take another early-round CB

Rick Spielman isn’t a stranger to drafting cornerbacks early in the NFL draft.

The team drafted Mike Hughes in the first round last year. There was Mackensie Alexander in the second round in the 2016 draft. Trae Waynes in the first round in 2015. And Xavier Rhodes in 2013.

The Vikings look somewhat set at cornerback heading into the 2019 season, although Holton Hill has a four-game suspension, and Waynes and Alexander are on the last year of their deals.

With that being said, the Vikings have bigger holes to fill (offensive line, anyone?). There would be some anger if the Vikings took another cornerback early in the draft, especially from someone pretty close to Spielman.

His wife.

“My wife… I’ll leave that at home. She said, ‘If you draft another corner, don’t come home. You can just stay at the office.’ Although there’s some pretty good corners that we like in the first round,” Spielman said Tuesday. “But no, I understand where everything is, but I also understand that if we have a guy that we think is a Pro Bowl talent, and for some reason, that guy falls to us at 18, how do you not take that player?”

There are plenty of offensive linemen to choose from in the draft. That’s where I’d put my money on the position the Vikings take early on. Former Vikings quarterback Tommy Kramer thinks the Vikings should use their first three picks on an offensive lineman.

But if Byron Murphy is there at No. 18, we always know there will be a possibility on Mike Zimmer whispering in Spielman’s ear to draft another cornerback, much to the dismay of Spielman’s wife.
