Rick Santorum to drop out of presidential race after poor showing in Iowa

Rick Santorum is expected to throw in the towel on his 2016 presidential campaign Wednesday night, leaving the Republican field without the last two winners of the Iowa Caucus, CNN reported.

Mike Huckabee, the 2008 Republican Iowa winner, ended his campaign Monday night.

Mr. Santorum, the former senator from Pennsylvania, didn't come close to recapturing his 2012 support. He came out of the Iowa Caucus Monday night with just 1 per cent of the vote. Only Jim Gilmore, who didn't campaign in the state, received less support, the Washington Post reported.

Santorum, Huckabee and Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, and Democrat Martin O'Malley all have dropped out of the race following Monday's caucuses.

Ted Cruz won the Republican caucus, capturing 28 per cent of the vote, followed by Donald Trump, at 24 per cent, and Marco Rubio, at 23 per cent. Hillary Clinton won Iowa on the Democrat side by a razor-thin margin over Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders.
