Richie Wellens named new Doncaster Rovers manager with surprising contract length revealed

Richie Wellens has been unveiled as Doncaster Rovers' new manager.

Wellens enjoyed two successful spells at the South Yorkshire club as a player, making 199 appearances across both stints.

He was unveiled earlier today following a series of leaked images on social media showing him at the club's Keepmoat Stadium.

Wellens was handed the role after beating off ex-Motherwell chief Stephen Robinson and QPR assistant John Eustace. Intriguingly, Donny have opted to hand Wellens just a one-year rolling contract.

It is said that the decision follows similar arrangements with Wellens' predecessors. Rovers are said to have inserted clauses that would ensure they are recompensed sufficiently, should other clubs show an interest in the 41-year-old.

It is likely the events surrounding Darren Moore's exit as Rovers boss last March will have played a part. Moore was poached by then-Championship side Sheffield Wednesday with Rovers sniffing around the play-off spots in League One.

Ultimately, they fell short under caretaker-player boss Andy Butler and will now meet the Owls next season after Moore's current employers were relegated from the second tier.

This is Wellens' fourth managerial role, having previously bossed Oldham, Swindon and Salford.

He won League Two last year with Swindon, via the PPG method after the season was curtailed, and also lifted the EFL Trophy with Salford - before being axed days later by the club's Class of 92 owners.

He is expected to be assisted in South Yorkshire by Noel Hunt, the former Republic of Ireland international.
