Richie Sambora Reflects On Abrupt Bon Jovi Departure

Richie Sambora

Former Bon Jovi member Richie Sambora recently reflected on his abrupt departure from the band during its Because We Can tour in 2013. Sambora, who joined Bon Jovi as the lead guitarist in 1983, left the group without warning just hours before a show in Calgary. In a recent Instagram post, Sambora shared a clip from the new Hulu docuseries, 'Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story.'

In the video, Sambora explained the personal reasons behind his departure, citing the challenges of being in a band and the need to support his family, particularly his ex-wife Heather Locklear and their daughter Ava. Locklear, known for her struggles with mental health and substance abuse, has been a significant factor in Sambora's life.

Despite their divorce, Sambora and Locklear have maintained a close relationship, with Sambora expressing his ongoing support for both Locklear and their daughter. Sambora himself has been open about his battles with substance abuse, seeking treatment for alcoholism in 2007 and 2011.

In the clip from the docuseries, Sambora apologized to Bon Jovi fans and his former bandmates for the way he left the band, expressing regret for his actions. He acknowledged the lack of compassion he felt he received during that challenging time.

Sambora's departure marked the end of a long-standing collaboration with frontman Jon Bon Jovi, with whom he co-wrote many of the band's hits. Sambora reflected on his role in the band, emphasizing his honesty and close relationship with Jon.

Jon Bon Jovi, in a recent interview, shared his perspective on Sambora's exit, attributing it to personal issues Sambora was facing at the time. Bon Jovi expressed understanding for Sambora's decision and emphasized that being in a rock band is not a lifelong commitment.

The insights shared by Sambora and Bon Jovi offer a glimpse into the complexities of band dynamics and personal struggles that can impact even the most successful musicians.
