Richie Murphy named Ireland Under-20 head coach

Richie Murphy has been appointed Ireland Under-20 head coach ahead of this summer’s Six Nations Championship.

Murphy has been skills and kicking coach for the senior team since 2013 and will retain a role with Andy Farrell’s side.

He will be in charge of the Under-20s for the next two seasons, including the rearranged Six Nations campaign, which is scheduled to take place during a condensed three-week period in June and July.

“It’s an exciting role that will allow me to fulfil a wider coaching brief and drive talent development across the pathway,” Murphy said in an Irish Rugby Football Union statement.

“The task is to ensure that they (players) have the skills, temperament and game appreciation to excel in the professional game at both provincial and national level.”

Ireland head coach Farrell said: “It will be important for us that Richie remains connected to the national team coaching group as his expertise and experience are of great benefit to the players.

“We have always had a strong relationship with the Under-20s squad and Richie’s appointment will only strengthen that connection.”
