Richie Hogan out of league opener after All-Ireland final red card upheld

Richie Hogan has failed in his bid to have his All-Ireland final red card overturned.

It means that the Kilkenny forward will miss the opening game of next year’s Allianz League having been hit with a one-match ban.

Hogan was sent off shortly before half-time in August’s final by referee James Owens for a challenge on Tipperary’s Cathal Barrett, who he caught flush on the chin.

At the time, Tipperary held a one-point lead but they went on to win the game by 14 and days later Hogan claimed that “there was absolutely no way it was a sending-off”.

The Danesfort man requested a hearing which took place on Monday last though the charge of “behaving in any way which is dangerous to an opponent” was proven by the Central Hearings Committee and the one-match ban imposed.

Hogan has the option of taking the matter to the Central Appeals Committee though his chances of success are slim and it is most likely that he will now accept the suspension and move on.

The 31-year-old has already intimated that, despite numerous injury problems in recent years, he is likely to play on for Kilkenny in 2020 as he doesn’t want his glittering inter-county career to end on such a sour note.
