Richarlison sent off for Thiago Alcantara horror foul after Virgil van Dijk injured

Richarlison has been sent off for a horror foul on Thiago Alcantara in the Merseyside derby, which saw Virgil van Dijk forced off with an injury.

The Everton forward went in very hard on the new signing from Bayern Munich on Saturday, in what was a very spicy affair at Goodison Park.

Richarlison suffered a knock himself in the challenge, but was greeted with a straight red card when he made his way to his feet.

The challenge came late on in the derby after Van Dijk was forced off with an injury after just 10 minutes of the first half following a foul from Jordan Pickford.

The Everton keeper got away with receiving a card despite the reckless nature of his tackle, as he tried to block the defender from shooting.

Steve McManaman could believe what he was seeing on BT Sport while providing commentary on the match.

"The challenge here on the Van Dijk injury... I'm very surprised because he could have easily been sent off for this challenge," McManaman said.

"I'm very surprised that it's all just been forgotten about in the offside situation."
