Richarlison absence explained as Everton injury fears grow after wild tackle

Richarlison has been ruled out of the game with Aston Villa after a knee injury sustained from James Tarkowski's wild challenge on Monday night, it is understood.

The Brazilian was clattered into by the Burnley defender, early in the second-half, and though Tarkowski won the ball, he also hurt Richarlison.

Referee Martin Atkinson failed to punish the challenge - described as "quite dangerous" by Rafa Benitez - and did not even award a free-kick.

The full extent of Richarlison's injury is not yet known but there is understandable anger that Tarkowski's challenge, which has injured the 24-year-old, was unpunished.

But the early concerns are that Richarlison could be sidelined for a number of weeks.

On Monday night, Benitez said: "I saw the tackle, I think the tackle is quite strong.

"When you know the ball is there, but behind the ball is the ankle, you can get one or the other or you can get both.

"But it is quite dangerous, these kinds of things you have to be careful of.

"One thing is to be physical and challenge - that is ok - but the other one is that these kinds of tacklers are quite dangerous for the integrity of the opponent."
