Richard Sherman slams NFL’s concussion policy

Former Seattle Seahawks defensive back Richard Sherman has never been afraid to share his thoughts, either out loud or on paper.

Most recently, Sherman penned an article in the San Francisco Chronicle detailing his feelings toward the NFL’s concussion policy and the “blatant disrespect” it shows NFL players.

“The NFL is happy to talk about recent reports that concussions have decreased by 23.8 percent within the past year, but questions, nevertheless, loom about the league’s sincerity to stand up for players’ safety,” Sherman writes in his first piece for the Chronicle. “The media need to bring more attention to how serious the concussion issue is for players, what’s being done and the advancements in science that will address the problem.”

Sherman has been outspoken about the NFL’s concussion policy in the past, calling it an “absolute joke” and something “done only for public opinion.”

He cites a Boston University study that shows that CTE, a degenerative brain disease caused by head trauma, was found in 91 percent of college football players and 21 percent of high school players.

Sherman finished the first year of his three-year deal with San Francisco in 2018 after playing his first seven NFL seasons with the Seahawks, making four Pro Bowls.
