Ex-Premier League star Richard Rufus is accused of conning investors into a “low risk” foreign currency exchange in a five-year fraud worth almost £9 million, it is said.

The former Charlton Athletic centre back, 44, “enticed” alleged victims into the scheme between 2007 and 2012, it is claimed.

Rufus, who played 288 times for Charlton, was due to appear at City of London magistrates’ court today to face charges of fraud by false representation, possession of criminal property, and carrying on a regulated activity when not an authorised or exempt person.

But his hearing was adjourned.

The total amount of the alleged fraud is believed to be £8,682,343.

Rufus, of Crystal Palace, is expected to appear in the dock for the first time on Thursday. He has not entered any pleas.
