Richard Masters explains what happened in meetings with the government over the Newcastle United takeover

The government and Premier League meetings regarding the Newcastle United takeover 'focused on the process and timing' of any decision made on the deal.

The Foreign Office and Premier League held two meetings last year as the consortium led by the Sovereign Wealth Fund of Saudi Arabia attempted to buy Newcastle United.

Richard Masters, the chief executive of the Premier League, has revealed the details of these meetings.

In a letter to Gateshead MP Ian Mearns, Mr Masters confirmed the meetings and noted: "These were solely to discuss the process by which an announcement on the prospective takeover of Newcastle United FC would have been communicated.

"The meetings provided the FCDO with an understanding of how any decision would be announced, so to assist the FCDO to inform their stakeholders in the region.

"The meetings were focused on the process and timing of the communication of a decision on the prospective takeover.

"All parties were clear that the decision on any prospective takeover was a matter solely for the Premier League."

Mr Mearns wrote to Mr Masters on the back of Chronicle Live's freedom of information request, urging him to release any correspondence that took place across the meetings.
