Richard Marshall enthused as Salford Red Devils prepare for earlier than expected St Helens encounter

Salford head coach Richard Marshall will get to see his squad pit their wits against the champions this weekend.

The Red Devils will link up with Marshall's former side St Helens for an opposed training session as they gear up for the new campaign.

Salford, who will play Wigan in a pre-season friendly next week, start the season against the Saints in three weeks.

For Marshall, the club's new head coach ahead of the campaign, the session will help him identify places of strength and improvement ahead of the campaign.

"It's an opposed session that we're really looking forward to as it gives us a chance to try a few things against different opposition," he said.

"We think Saints will have a few younger members of the squad featuring and we'll be similar, but at the same time, our new signings will play and a few lads I don't know much about, which is exciting to see how they get on.

"It will give me and the coaching staff a chance to have a good look at us and whether we've implemented everything we want to see."

Marshall has no concerns about putting a foot in enemy territory weeks before they face off and insists he is enthused as the season draws closer.

"When you look at the fixtures and they're put together, some teams get an easier run, some get a harder run. In our competition, we have loop fixtures which, if I'm I'm honest, isn't ideal, but with everything going on with Covid there are so many variables, so we're not really bothered where who or when, we just want to improve every week.

"We have got a tough start, our focus is just one game at the start of the season. Before you know it, it will be Easter and you're halfway through the season. We just want to keep improving, see the team play a different brand of football and do all the things we've set out to do from the start."
