Richard Madeley snaps 'one rule for you, one rule for us' at Tory MP over pilot scheme

Richard Madeley snapped at a Tory MP over what he dubbed a "convenient" pilot scheme which allows Michael Gove to do Covid tests without isolating, despite receiving an alert on the app.

Grilling Housing Secretary Robert Jenrick, Richard probed him about Gove's situation.

Joined by Charlotte Hawkins, the 65-year-old presenter said: "Forgive my cynicism, but you talk about caution - how is it that your cabinet colleague Mr Gove has been pinged on track and trace and yet, like the rest of us, he doesn't have to isolate, he's just doing tests?"

Jenrick replied: "I haven't spoken to Michael so I don't know all the details exactly but it sounds like the system worked.

"So he went to a country that was on the green list and then got pinged, he's self-isolating and will be doing testing, so that's encouraging. He's taking part in a pilot, as I understand, where people can have slightly different circumstances. But I'm sure he's going to take all of the necessary precautions, he's not been coming into the office-"

Richard interjected: "It strikes many people as a very convenient pilot scheme which we all can't take part in, that's all. One rule for you and one for us."

It comes after he earlier awkwardly quipped that Piers Morgan has "not left the building".

Richard referred to Piers as "the master" after spotting his appearance in a GMB NTAs advert.

After it aired, Richard remarked: "Listen, it just goes to show that Piers hasn't quite left the building. There are still shades of the master still with us."

"Still there in spirit," Charlotte replied awkwardly before changing the subject. "It always makes me laugh - the story with Kate and the milkman."

His comments may have left ITV bosses with their heads in hands after GMB's steep drop in viewing figures following Piers' exit, with ratings nosediving to a new low earlier this week.
