Richard Madeley has thrown his hat into the ring to replace Piers Morgan on Good Morning Britain.

Following the controversial presenter’s departure from ITV’s early morning programme last month, there has been intense speculation regarding who will join Susanna Reid as GMB’s co-host.

Now Madeley has voiced his interest in presenting the show, telling Metro.co.uk: “If the phone went and they said, ‘would you come in and talk?’, of course I would talk to them. It would be bonkers not to.”

The presenter, who has been a substitute host on Good Morning Britain since 2017, admitted that he enjoyed “sitting in” for the full-time presenters, where he had “all the fun and very little of the responsibility or flak”.

However, asked if he could handle the online abuse received by figures such as Morgan, he continued: “I personally couldn’t give a f***. Far too many younger presenters have been affected by Twitter and cowed by it.

“I remember when I started sitting in for Piers on Good Morning Britain, I’d have a look at Twitter after I’d done a programme and, yes, you get some nice comments but you also get horrendous abuse and, from time to time, death threats.”

Morgan exited the ITV show in March, following backlash to comments he had made about Meghan Markle and her interview with Oprah Winfrey.

Adil Ray joined Reid this month as GMB co-presenter.
