Richard Madeley hits out at MP for 'waste of airtime' once tense interview ends

Richard Madeley hit out at a Tory MP for a 'waste of airtime' after a tense interview on Brexit .

After discussing today's GCSE results, school's minister Nick Gibb was asked about Boris Johnson's talks with the European leaders.

The Good Morning Britain presenter became frustrated with the Conservative MP when he wouldn't give him a direct answer on Brexit.

Richard accused Gibb of "avoiding" the answer as he repeatedly asked whether Johnson would "play France off against Germany".

Gibb claimed the GMB host was "presenting this in machiavellian terms" - leading Richard to lash out once the interview had ended.

Co-host Ranvir Singh admitted it was "imaginative" how politicians manage to use the same answer for differently worded questions.

"He’s doing his job. I respect him for that," said Richard with a heavy sigh.

He continued: "However I’m up to there with politicians who give your broad spectrum answers to specific questions."

Richard compared politicians like Gibb avoiding direct answers to someone asking for war strategy in a particular field of war and getting the answer 'it's important we win the war'.

He said: "Again and again and again on this programme you get these generalised answers that drift into statements of, sorry, the bleeding obvious.

"And it’s obviously a question for a government minister about what Boris Johnson , the cards he’s been given by Angela Merkel, how he will play them today.

"I wouldn’t ask him for insider information. But to give generalise answers to questions like that..."

Richard then threw up his pen in the air before impressively catching it with one hand.

"...it's just a waste of airtime," added smooth Rich. "Of ours and yours. But we do try."

He later joked that he should ask them where they’re going on holiday at the end of every interview to get a straight answer
