Richard Madeley forced to undergo surgery after freak accident as he explains GMB absence

Richard Madeley told his Good Morning Britain co-host Susanna Reid why he been absent from his hosting role for two weeks on Monday.

The presenter had been missing from his usual spot alongside Susanna and explained an injury was responsible for his absence.

During Monday's show, Susanna welcomed her co-presenter back as he admitted he needed to have an operation due to a "freak accident".

Susanna remarked: "We haven't yet, Richard Madeley, said welcome back, you appear to have made a full recovery."

"Oh yes, hi," Richard replied before explaining he had been talking with a lisp for "quite a long time".

"I was either a freak having an accident or I had a freak accident, take your pick," he continued.

"I was crouching down on a slope between my open car door and I was just fiddling around with something at the bottom of the car and I turned around just as the door decided to close itself, gravity pulled it shut."

As Susanna gasped and put her head in her hands, her co-host added: "It's a big heavy door and it hit me on the chin and I really bit my tongue, to the extent I needed an op, I had to have some stitches in it."
