Richard Madeley experienced 'paranoia' on I'm A Celeb and thought viewers hated him

Richard Madeley has admitted that he experienced 'paranoia' at the beginning of I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here!

The 65-year-old TV presenter entered the 2021 series slightly late with Frankie Bridge as the pair were chosen by the public to do the first proper trial.

When they arrived at Gwrych Castle, Richard and Frankie were told they would be heading into a four storey building to win stars - and food - for their fellow campmates.

Speaking on I'm A Celebrity... Legends of the Castle on Wednesday evening, Richard said he didn't feel great when he first arrived.

"I got out of my roller and five minutes later we're being covered in bugs, I mean like you were literally thrown in at the deep end," he explained.

"And it was also a shock to hear Frankie and I had been picked by the viewers to do the first trial.

"And you've gotta watch your paranoia then. You've gotta watch that you don't think, 'have I been picked because everyone hates me and they want to see me suffer?'

Speaking about why he finally decided to do the ITV show, Richard said: "Oh I'd been watching I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! since it started, I don't think I'd ever missed a series.

"I just suddenly thought, 'I actually wanna be on the inside of this'." Richard added.

Unfortunately, it wasn't meant to be for Richard as he ended up having to leave the castle a few days in after falling ill and being taken to hospital.

"I think what happened was, I can only describe it as a funny turn, so I was carted off to hospital," Richard explained on Legends of the Castle.

Arlene Phillips admitted that she struggled when she found out that Richard wasn't returning to camp.

Arlene said: "It was really hard for me when Richard left because he was my friend, my ally and he was closest to my age, I had a hard time picking myself up from that."
