Richard Madden's Bodyguard future 'depends on what happens with James Bond'

World Productions/BBC/PA

Richard Madden is seriously being considered as the next James Bond, according to a producer of hit series Bodyguard.

The rumour mill surrounding Madden's appointment as the next 007 has been in overdrive since he showcased his action hero skills in the BBC drama, but any decision has been considered a long way off considering Daniel Craig is yet to film what is expected to be his final outing as the British spy.

However, an unnamed producer who works on Bodyguard reportedly told The Mail that Madden's involvement in series two “depends [on] what happens with James Bond”.

Madden himself remained coy when asked about the rumours, telling GQ: “Everyone just loves the rumour mill on that topic. I’m just the current one. There’ll be a different one next week.”

In October 2018, Madden was reportedly named as one of producer Barbara Broccoli's favourites to take over from Craig after he steps down.

Cary Joji Fukunaga replaced Danny Boyle as director of the next Bond film last year and is currently re-writing his script that reportedly ruffled up feathers over at Eon Productions.

While obviously hesitant to reveal any details – not least because the script is not yet complete – Fukunaga has confirmed one rather big point: it’ll bring things full circle for Craig by continuing the arc first presented in Casino Royale, his first outing as 007.
