Richard Keys left with egg on his face after advising Pep Guardiola to seek Sam Allardyce help

Richard Keys has been left red-faced following his suggestion that Pep Guardiola should turn to Sam Allardyce for defensive help after Manchester City thrashed West Brom 5-0.

Former Sky Sports presenter Keys now works for Qatar-based beIN SPORTS, and was speaking about the situation back in October.

City had had a shaky start to the season, and were stunned 5-2 by Leicester City at the end of September.

Discussing Guardiola's issues at the back, Keys' co-host Andy Gray said: "It's a strange one. I don't know why Pep can't get his head around it.

"Maybe he's just a coach who likes to coach positive football. Maybe he has another coach who does the back four."

Keys then added: "He's got 60 people around him. It can't be that hard.

"He (Guardiola) could go and watch Roy Hodgson work, or bring Sam Allardyce in on a temporary basis.

"Any of these teams have shaped teams defensively, haven't they."

Despite the suggestions, Guardiola decided not to heed their advice.

And City have improved hugely defensively ever since, and have now kept clean sheets in each of their last four Premier League games.

They put Allardyce's West Brom to the sword on Wednesday, scoring four first-half goals to effectively end the game as a contest before adding one more in the second half.

Since taking over the Baggies in December, Allardyce and his side have conceded three goals or more on four occasions, and in total they have leaked a massive 24 goals in eight games.

Tuesday's result at the Hawthorns means they remain in 19th position in the table, six points adrift of 17th placed Brighton having played a game more.

City, meanwhile, returned to the top, and Guardiola's defensive worries look to be nothing but a distant memory.
