Richard Keys claims Liverpool sold the 'wrong player'

Presenter Richard Keys believes Liverpool sold the 'wrong player' this summer after Sadio Mane departed the club for Bayern Munich.

The Senegalese spent six years on Merseyside between 2016 and 2022 and racked up over 260 appearances for the club in that time. He left Anfield earlier in the summer in a deal worth a potential £35m to join the Bundesliga champions,

He was about the enter the final year of his contract with Liverpool, as was former teammate Mohamed Salah. The Egyptian ended any speculation over his future in July and signed a new long-term contract, making him the highest paid player in the club's history.

The Reds haven't had the best start to the season, collecting only nine points out of a possible 18 in the Premier League. They were also defeated 4-1 by Napoli in their opening Champions League group stage fixture earlier this month.

Keys says, despite Mane 's own challenging start to the season at Bayern, Liverpool sold the 'wrong player' as he's been a huge miss for Jurgen Klopp 's team so far.

"I can’t pretend that I’m a little surprised about Liverpool’s stuttering start," he wrote in his blog. "I’m sure it’ll come right, but they look tired. Salah is still way off and that’s got to be a concern for Klopp.

"I know they had to sell either Mane or Salah because both contracts were winding down, but at the moment it looks as if they sold the wrong one, despite Mane’s apparent difficulties in Munich."

Salah has scored twice in the league this season and he also netted the opening goal of the 2-1 victory over Ajax last week. Mane, on the other hand, has scored five goals in 11 appearances for Bayern in all competitions so far this term.
