Richard Keys admits he wishes the Saudi takeover was not happening at Newcastle United

Richard Keys has admitted he wishes the Saudi-led takeover was not happening at Newcastle United.

The former Sky Sports presenter has been quick to discuss the Magpies' fortunes in recent years.

Keys has regularly drawn criticism from Magpies' supporters on social media for his opinions on former boss Rafa Benitez during his spell on Tyneside.

Mike Ashley has granted Amanda Staveley and her Middle East consortium until mid-May get a takeover deal completed.

Now, the beIN Sports anchor has confirmed he wished the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund had not selected United for the proposed takeover, and has discussed the morality of the move.

Speaking on the channel's Keys and Gray Special, he said: "I wish it wasn't Newcastle United that the Saudis want to buy.

"We've been talking a lot about morality and resetting the button, and when we all come back why there's a good reason we can all expect football to be better.

"There was a number of different views on this at the weekend. Oliver Holt who I respect and think is a terrific writer was way off the mark.

"Barney Ronay in the Guardian was spot on. Andy Dunn in the Mirror, absolutely spot on.

"Are we to look away and forget everything? Now is there an argument that it is nobody's business how Saudi Arabia does it's business domestically?

"I get and understand that, we should never try and impose western morals and principles on countries elsewhere in the world. It is for them to decide how to run their country. I wouldn't argue with that.

"But if you are the host country who are inviting in, I think you've got a right to say these are the rules."

Keys also stated the reason he has "difficulty" with accepting the takeover is due to an ongoing row with Saudi Arabia broadcasting beIN Sports channels illegally.

He added: "It has cost this company millions."
