Richard Keogh wins appeal in €2.6 million case against former club Derby County

Richard Keogh will receive a payout of roughly €2.65 million (£2.3 million) after he won an appeal in his compensation claim against former club Derby County.

Keogh was sacked in October 2019 after sustaining a serious knee injury in a car crash that led to team-mates Tom Lawrence and Mason Bennett being convicted of drink-driving.

The Republic of Ireland international, who had faced 12 months out of the game, was fired a month after the accident which followed a team- bonding night.

The 24-year-old defender brought a breach of contract case against the club to the EFL’s Player Related Dispute Commission [PRDC] after his dismissal, and initially won a full payout.

But after Derby contested the decision, the League Appeals’ Committee [LAC] has upheld the verdict.

An EFL statement read: "The LAC has heard and dismissed an appeal under the regulations of the EFL by Derby against the decision of the PRDC in the case of Richard Keogh. The PDRC held that Mr Keogh had not committed gross misconduct, that he had not brought the club into serious disrepute and that he had been wrongly dismissed by the club."

Keogh returned to the Championship this season after initally joining MK Dons.

Making 21 appearances in the first half of the season, Keogh joined Huddersfield in January until the end of the season.
