Richard Keogh joins Ireland camp to lend support for Denmark showdown

Richard Keogh is lending his support to the Ireland squad from behind the scenes.

The defender, 33, was sacked by Derby County two weeks ago for his part in a drink-fuelled car smash that left him with a gruesome knee injury and out of football for at least a year.

Keogh, a back-seat passenger when the incident happened on a Derby team bonding night  in September, is fighting the club’s decision to boot him out.

But tonight he was pictured smiling with Ireland boss Mick McCarthy and his backroom staff, as well as his defensive colleagues Shane Duffy, Kevin Long and John Egan.

Keogh and Duffy had been Ireland’s first-choice centre-back pairing under McCarthy before the remarkable chain of events.

At the PFA Ireland awards last weekend, McCarthy said of Keogh: “I’m astounded with what’s going on there, I really am.

“If Richard had got in an Uber and the Uber driver was drunk, I don’t think they’d have sacked him would they?.”
