Richard Keogh delighted that Ireland fans left tennis balls at home for Switzerland draw

Ireland star Richard Keogh was delighted that Ireland fans left the tennis balls at home and roared their side on to a vital draw with Switzerland last night.

The Derby County defender hailed the supporters as 'the best in the world' after a scrappy game saw the Boys in Green sneak a late goal to continue their unbeaten run under Mick McCarthy.

Keogh told Irish Mirror: "When that goal went in, it was some feeling.

"You always know when the Aviva is like this it's amazing and I think it's a credit to everyone involved, the manager coming in and the players on the pitch getting everyone back excited.

"I hope we've given them something to cheer about because obviously we had a tough time last year, but I think people can see what we're trying to do now.

"We've got an energetic group, a really fit group and we're trying to get after teams a bit more and try to build up our moves a bit better.

"We're creating a lot more chances and we look a threat."

A protest at Ireland's last home qualifier against then-Chief Executive John Delaney saw some spectators throw tennis balls on to the field during a break in play.

But there was a happier feeling in the air at the Aviva Stadium, and Keogh has doubled down on the idea that there are no better supporters than the Irish.

"That was interesting the last time of course, but we've got the best fans in the world and tonight just proves it."
