Richard Brindley questions Yeovil desire following Meadow Lane stalemate

Richard Brindley has questioned Yeovil's desire to attack during their goalless draw with Notts County, but insists their tactics are down to the quality of football played by his side.

The Magpies were forced to settle for just one point in front of a record National League crowd on Saturday afternoon, seeing Wrexham overtake them in the standings following their win over Aldershot.

It was the first time Notts had failed to score in front of their home supporters since April 2021, ending a 39-game run that stretched back to Ian Burchnall's time at the club.

But Luke Williams' side had chances to take home all three points, with Macaulay Langstaff, Kyle Cameron and Adam Chicksen squandering golden opportunities much to the frustration of those inside Meadow Lane.

And speaking after the game, Brindley explained that despite playing well, the result feels like a loss having not being able to find the net.

"Everyone can see that we dominated the whole game, it's frustrating and it almost feels like a loss when you play so well, and you could say the only thing missing today was scoring a goal today."

Mark Cooper's side used the occasion to their advantage, looking to waste time from as early as the 20th minute to frustrate those inside the stadium and rarely offer anything going forward.

But it is not the first time a side have looked to play defensively against the Magpies, with Torquay, and most notably Bromley looking to adopt similar tactics to preserve taking a point away from Meadow Lane.

And Brindley explained that those tactics are largely down to the brilliance of Notts' play so far this season and he expects similar encounters to play out in similar fashion as the campaign progresses.

"I think it was just one of those days," explained Brindley.

"They made it very difficult for us and they sat in the whole time. We said at the start of the second half, as soon as it kicked off, they just backed off and had no interest of scoring a goal.

"When you play teams like that, they make it really difficult for you.

"We are going to have more games like that and that is part and parcel of us playing some really good football and are so difficult to beat.

"We have to take that on the chin and extract what we can do better because I am sure many teams will want to play in the same way against us."

During the game, the Magpies had 80% possession and had 27 attempts on Grant Smith's goal, fashioning 15 corners to add to that, with Yeovil boasting just two shots all afternoon along with two corners.

Brindley questioned Yeovil's desire to try and win the game but explained his side will look at the positives of the performance and try not to dwell on the result, with a timely break to regroup ahead of their trip to Scunthorpe in two weeks time.

"It's obviously strange to see when you look at it. There are two sides that want to win the game out there supposedly but, when we play teams like that, they have no desire to win the game.

"But tactically they can get a counter and score a goal whereas we go into the game wanting to dictate and we know what we want to do.

"There are so many positives to look at today, and we need to make sure that we are not too frustrated with not winning, because we know we can't win every single game.

"But again, we have the mentality as a squad where we know we can keep doing more and every single game we look to get better and better."
