Eve Branson dead: Richard Branson's mum dies of Covid 10 years after being saved from fire

Richard Branson's mum Eve has died aged 96 after a battle with coronavirus.

It's been a decade since brave actress Kate Winslet rescued Eve from a house fire at Richard's 14-bed home on a Caribbean Island in August 2011.

Richard broke the news of his mum's death to his 12.5million fans on Twitter on Monday.

The entrepreneur, 70, celebrated his mother's "wonderful life" and the "joy" she brought in his loving tribute.

He tweeted: "I’m sorry to share that, sadly like a lot of people’s mums and dads right now in these days of Covid, my mum Eve has also passed away.

"Rather than mourn her loss, I wanted to celebrate her wonderful life & the joy she brought to so many."

Eve hit headlines in August 2011 when Titanic actress Kate saved her from a fire.

At the time, Kate and his mum were among 20 guests staying at the Great House when a fire broke out at 4am in the morning.

Richard remembered how Kate swept his mum off her feet and carried her down a few steps to safety.

"My mum is 90 and can walk, but it was more just to speed the process up than anything else. But anyway, she was great. She swept her up into her arms and got them out of the house as fast as possible," Branson told The Telegraph.

"Talking to her, she said it's like being in a film set where you're waiting for the words 'cut' but they just don't come. So it was quite surreal for her to be in a real-life situation."

Eve achieved many great things in her life and she was fearless.

Once she took glider lessons while dressed as a boy.

The entrepreneur's mum performed all over Germany as a ballet dancer after the Second World War.

Richard previously credited starting his high-flying career down to his mum after she gave him £100.

He said: “It is no exaggeration to say I owe my career to mum. One day in the late Sixties mum saw a necklace lying on the road near Shamley Green and took it to the police station.

“After three months nobody had claimed it so the police told her she could keep it. She came up to London, sold the necklace and gave me the money. Without that £100, I could never have started Virgin.

"We were so sad to lose dad back in 2011, but mum did exactly as he would have wished by continuing to grab life with both hands.”

Eve is survived by three children, 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
