Richard and Judy give up their daytime TV crown

So Richard Madeley and Judy Finnigan are quitting their Channel 4 chat show. Daytime TV will never be the same again.

However, comes as no surprise they're quitting the daily grind of live television. Judy has been dropping hints for a couple of years she'd like to spend more time at their Cornwall home and write a book.

Twenty years in the spotlight of live TV - discussing every detail of their lives from taking Viagra to having a vasectomy - is undoubtedly a long time.

It all began in Liverpool Dock on 3 October 1988 with the launch of This Morning. Here are the credits for that first show and Richard's opening question to Judy: "What's coming up today love?" Classic stuff.

Richard and Judy and the show were a hit and the programme moved to London in 1996.

But they were sensationally poached by Channel 4 and left in July 2001 after falling out with their ITV boss Maureen Duffy.

Their new teatime Channel 4 show, which they had more control over, had a slow start but grew to become another hit.

The generation of students who grew up with Richard and Judy's daily banter will miss them. As will the headline writers.

The couple have landed some big interviews over the years - Bill Clinton, Tony Blair and Cherie Blair's first live interview to name but a few.

But they've also given us some laughs with their infamous gaffes, particularly Richard's.

In 2000, he dressed up as Ali G on This Morning and tried to rap. To be fair to Richard, it was This Morning's viewers who were to blame for voting for him to update his look by emulating Ali G.

But that didn't stop the clip being voted the worst TV moment of all time in a Channel 4 poll.

Then in 2001 Richard opined that the creator of the cartoon Roobarb And Custard must have been on drugs. A swift on-air apology before the end of the show followed - before the lawyers got on the phone.

He also asked singer Sophie Ellis Bextor: 'Where did you get your face? It's Egyptian."

Judy had her own embarrassing moment when her halterneck dress slid down to her waist without her realising it at the National Television Awards in 2000. Poor Judy was mortified for months afterwards.

One of my favourites though is the interview Richard did with Shakin' Stevens when he was on his old show Calendar. Fast forward to one minute 20 to see Shaky do an Emu on Richard.

But now the couple are doing less live TV, such gaffes are likely to become history. Very bad news for compilers of TV clip show compliation shows.
