Ricardo Moniz returns to football with top flight job

Former Notts County boss Ricardo Moniz has been appointed manager of Dutch side Excelsior.

The 57-year-old faces a tough test to keep his new side in the top flight with Excelsior currently 17th in the Eredivisie and on their way to a relegation play-off.

Moniz may only oversee five games at Van Donge & De Roo Stadion, starting with a clash against Ajax on Saturday, after only penning a short-term deal.

The Dutch boss walked out on Slovakian top tier side AS Trecin in November after he spectacularly claimed that the club was 'suffering' due to his 'explosive nature', adding: "This league is not ready for it."

He had led them to fifth in the Fortuna Liga, enough to qualify for a Europa League spot.

"It's a great honor," said Moniz, who returns to his home city of Rotterdam.

"It is a fantastic club that certainly belongs in the top division. It's an authentic club that has always been itself.

"It suits me well that we have five cup finals left, and the mission for the coming weeks is straightforward - survival."

Moniz's latest appointment is his fourth since being being sacked by Notts in December 2015.
