Ribena is getting rid of plastic straws on its cartons

Ribena has been including plastic straws with its drinks cartons for years but it's now ditching them in favour of paper alternatives.

The drinks manufacturer trialled the paper straws in Tesco stores and it was successful.

Now brand owner Suntory Beverage and Food GB&I (SBF GB&I) will roll it out across every carton, a 100 per cent recyclable alternative to single-use plastic straws.

Before the change, Ribena's plastic straws created up to 16 tonnes of plastic, which are hard to recycle in Britain.

The new paper straws have been further strengthened on the back of the Tesco trial, and they'll still be bendable.

They're strong enough to pierce the carton, the brand says, and they'll start to appear on cartons from this month.

The full roll out will take place in April, SBF GB&I said.

For hygienic reasons, the brand will still wrap its straws in plastic, but the company says it is working on a hygienic solution from alternative materials that could withstand being in fridges and carried in backpacks.

The Government ban on plastic on-pack straws will come into force this July.

Jo Padwick, transformation manager at SBF GB&I, said: “It is great to see our years of hard work getting such positive reviews from Ribena drinkers.

“We have taken into account all of the feedback to help us improve the new paper straw that is now being launched on the range across all stores.

“Saying goodbye to the final plastic straw is a great step on our journey towards 100% sustainable packaging by 2030.”
