Rian Nolan death devastates West Belfast community

A teenage footballer who died after an illness has been described as a young man with a "bright future".

Rian Nolan, from West Belfast , died at the Children's Haematology Unit at the Royal on Saturday surrounded by his family.

The 14-year-old was a popular member of St James' Swifts under sixteen side.

Club secretary David Walsh told Belfast Live that he was a "fully committed young fella".

He said: "My own son played in the same team as him and I would have attended the matches.

"He was a very pleasant young fella, he was a kid you wanted to coach every day of the week.

"He never complained, and always did what he was asked to do. He had a bright future."

His teammates were told the news after their match on Saturday.

David said: "His teammates had their match on Saturday and the management told them after.

"The boys were devastated. It is a close-knit wee team, a good bunch of lads.

"Our club ethics is about community and it's family orientated and it's affected everybody.

"His teammates knew about his illness and kept close contact with him so they're completely devastated and shocked by it."
