Rhys Ruddock skippers 'experimental' Ireland team to face Italy in RWC 2019 warm-up

Leinster's Rhys Ruddock will skipper the Ireland team to face Italy in the opening World Cup warm-up at the Aviva Stadium this Saturday.

As expected, Joe Schmidt and his management team have selected an experimental line-up, with Leinster pairing Devin Toner and Garry Ringrose the only two regular Test starters included.

Joey Carbery starts at out-half as Jean Kleyn is handed his Ireland debut for the opening World Cup warm-up against Italy at the Aviva Stadium on Saturday.

And with several more players likely to be cut from the provisional panel next week, this is a chance for a number of squad members to make an early statement to Schmidt.

Jordan Larmour is given another opportunity at full-back, and he is joined in the back three by Andrew Conway and Dave Kearney.

Ringrose is partnered at centre by Chris Farrell, with Carbery getting the nod at no 10 and Luke McGrath at scrum-half.

In the front row, Jack McGrath is at loosehead and Andrew Porter at tighthead, with Rob Herring at hooker.

Kleyn, who recently became eligible for Ireland under the residency rule, is joined in the second row by Toner, while in the back row, Ruddock has Tommy O'Donnell at openside flanker and no 8 Jordi Murphy for company.

Schmidt will call on some serious artillery off the bench with Cian Healy and Iain Henderson named among the substitutes, while Mike Haley could also make his debut off the bench.

The Ireland team to face Italy:

J Larmour, A Conway, G Ringrose, C Farrell, D Kearney, J Carbery, L McGrath; J McGrath, R Herring, A Porter, D Toner, J Kleyn, R Ruddock, T O'Donnell, J Murphy. Replacements: N Scannell, C Healy, J Ryan, I Henderson, T Beirne, K Marmion, J Carty, M Haley.
