Rhys Patchell's mum couldn't bear to watch the Wales game so went to church to pray instead

Rhys Patchell's mum was so nervous before the game against the Wallabies she went to church instead.

During a radio interview, Eleanor recalled how, after preparing the Sunday roast, she couldn't take the pressure and went off to pray instead.

"I was extremely nervous." she told BBC Radio Wales. "I didn't see it [the game].

"I had prepared all the Sunday veg in the kitchen when the game started and then I went to church out of the way. I didn't see any of his performance until I came home and I knew that the 'ship was in dock' as it were, and all was safe."

She added that "the prayers of the Welsh Congregational Church were answered I think."

Despite her nerves she claimed she was not surprised at how well he performed.

She said: "I was obviously proud as was his father and everyone else.

"It is an awful thing to sound very cocky but I was not surprised because he is very calm under pressure and he would have known that he had that performance in him given the opportunity I think.

"'The boy did well' is what his father said. We are not a jumping up and down family. We laugh and joke among friends but I watch from behind the sofa."

Patchell, of course, was at the centre of one of the controversial moments during the game, when he was the victim of an illegal foreman from Samu Kerevi that sparked outrage among the Wallabies. You can read all about that here.

But, during a video call with his mother later on Sunday, the player was unfazed by it all.

Eleanor said: "He doesn't go in for histrionics. He looked fine and was very pleased to get through it without any injury.

"He said it was great but no good if we don't do the business against Fiji."

It is really tough for a parent watching their child sustain injuries on the field and Rhys' mum described his collision with Kerevi as an "ugly moment".

Patchell has suffered numerous concussions in recent years, taking large periods out of the game to recover. Back in 2015, he was even unable to remember flying to Belfast after a serious head blow against Ulster in a PRO14 match.

She added: "It is difficult. When he had a head injury out in Belfast we were watching and that was difficult. It was a matter of ringing round all the Belfast hospitals.

"I doubt I will be watching next Wednesday."
