Rhys Patchell hands Wales Rugby World Cup injury scare after yet another head blow

Rhys Patchell has handed Wales a Rugby World Cup scare after being forced off with a head injury against Ireland in Dublin.

Patchell suffered the blow when attempting to tackle CJ Stander in the build-up to Ireland's opening try of the match, scored by full-back Rob Kearney in the 21st minute.

The outside-half left the field to undergo a Head Injury Assessment and failed to return to the action, with Dan Biggar taking his place permanently.

It's unclear whether Patchell failed the HIA or if Wales chose not to risk putting him back on the pitch.

The development is a huge concern two weeks before the World Cup for a player who missed a large part of last season after suffering two concussions.

Those incidents made it three concussions in the space of 12 months, while he also had a long lay-off in 2015 after being 'sparked out' during a regional match.

Patchell was named in Wales' 31-man World Cup squad last Sunday after impressing off the bench against Ireland last weekend. He pipped Jarrod Evans for a place in the squad, with the young Cardiff Blues man now on standby.
