Rhydian Bowen Phillips gutted as Disneyland trip in tatters after Flybe collapse

Rhydian Bowen Phillips has revealed his heartbreak after the collapse of Flybe was confirmed hours before his family were due to set off to a dream trip to Disneyland.

The Welsh presenter and singer had been due to fly to Disneyland Paris from Cardiff as a birthday treat.

At around 3am this morning it was confirmed that Europe's largest regional airline had ceased trading with immediate effect.

After hearing the news, Rhydian took to Twitter to ask: "We are due to fly to Paris with @flybe from @Cardiff_Airport early tomorrow morning (Thurs 5th). Never been involved in something like this. What happens re possible alternative flights, @DisneyParis_EN hotel and tickets? What do we do? Help/advice please #Flybe "

He then shared an update from Cardiff Airport's official Twitter account which confirmed all Flybe flights had been cancelled.

"Flybe customers should not come to the airport," was the advice from the airport.

One of Rhydian's followers then asked if he'd been able to book on another flight.

"Na," replied Rhydian followed by a sad face.

With his holiday off, Rydian then joined in with thousands of Twitter users speculating at the cause of FlyBes' closure.

He fired off to his followers: "The #Flybecollapse is clearly down to Brexit and not Coronavirus as some sources are trying to suggest. C’mon people. Don’t believe the lies..."

Earlier today it was reported Flybe has gone into administration in a crushing blow to its 2,000 workers and thousands living in remote communities across the UK.

Chief executive Mark Anderson confirmed the news in an email to staff late last night - adding it was with "enormous sadness" that the company could no longer continue.

Flybe had struggled to raise funds after narrowly staving off trouble in January.

A collapse was averted two months ago when the government said it would review air passenger duty (APD) - which hits domestic flights hard because it's charged at both departure and arrival.

Flybe also agreed a financial arrangement to defer tax payments of "less than £10 million" with HM Revenue and Customs, deferring its Air Passenger Duty payments.

But bookings then severely dropped off due to the coronavirus outbreak which "made a difficult situation worse", it is understood. Crisis talks had been held throughout Wednesday to try to secure a rescue package, but no deal was agreed.

All Flybe flights and those operated by sister airline Stobart Air have been cancelled, the Civil Aviation Authority said.
