Rhian Brewster sends Jurgen Klopp reminder but Liverpool youngsters suffer nightmare

It may not have been in front of more than 50,000 baying Liverpool supporters desperate for the team to extend their lead at the top of the table.

But elsewhere on Sunday, Rhian Brewster posted a reminder to Jurgen Klopp of his own first-team claims by helping the Reds earn another hard-earned triumph.

Brewster forced an own goal and then won and converted a penalty as the under-23s came from behind to win 2-1 at Sunderland in their Premier League Cup clash.

Sunderland took the lead moments into the second half when Benji Kimpioka beat Reds goalkeeper Dan Atherton with a shot into the bottom corner.

Brewster, though, forced an own goal midway through the second half, and with seven minutes remaining was upended by Jack Bainbridge inside the area.

The 19-year-old picked himself up and held his nerve to score from the spot to ensure Neil Critchley's side have earned two wins out of two in Group F. They complete the group stage at Huddersfield town on December 2.

On Saturday, though, Liverpool U18s endured a much more difficult afternoon at West Browmich Albion.

Barry Lewtas' side conceded six goals during a nightmare first half - Baggies forward Jovan Malcolm scoring four - in their U18s Premier League North clash.

Max Woltman, making his full debut at U18 level, scored just before half-time and another in the second half with Conor Bradley netting his first goal to make the scoreline a slightly more respectable 6-3.

With leaders Manchester City also losing on the day - 2-1 at home to neighbours United - Liverpool remain two points adrift in second place.
