Rhian Brewster's 'mad' Liverpool realisation after netting brace in bumper friendly victory over Tranmere Rovers

Rhian Brewster’s road to recovery has been a long journey, but the 19-year-old is fully aware of the changing fortunes he is now experiencing.

The academy striker was sidelined for over a year having suffered a serious knee injury during a 3-2 defeat to Manchester City under-23s in January 2018, but Brewster is back, and certainly has a point to prove.

His two goals in Liverpool’s 6-0 triumph over local neighbours Tranmere Rovers issued a further reminder to Jurgen Klopp of just what he is capable of, and Brewster explained how he is making the most of first-team opportunities after what has been a deeply frustrating period.

“This time last year I was out injured. I was here watching the boys play against Tranmere and this year I'm here playing,” he told Liverpoolfc.com following the full-time whistle.

“It's mad how far you can come in a year," continued the 19-year-old.

“I’m loving every minute of pre-season. It's tough, don't get me wrong, but I'd rather be out there than on the treatment bench.

“I'm taking every moment as it comes. It's great to be back out there.”

Aside from Brewster’s brace, also on the scoresheet were Nathaniel Clyne, Curtis Jones, Divock Origi and Bobby Duncan as Liverpool kick-started their pre-season schedule in the perfect manner.

Yesterday’s Prenton Park encounter was the Reds’ first match since achieving European glory in Madrid, and the 19-year-old believes it was important that the side continued their forward momentum.

“It was good to start the pre-season right," he said.

“I think the team played really well in both halves. Obviously, it's good to get two goals and an assist, but overall I think the first-half team and second-half team played really well.”
