Rhian Brewster injury latest ahead of Liverpool trip to Aston Villa in Carabao Cup

Rhian Brewster is a fitness doubt for Liverpool’s Carabao Cup quarter-final at Aston Villa on Tuesday.

The teenage striker is nursing an ankle problem and will be assessed ahead of the game at Villa Park as a string of young players

Brewster has featured in both games in the competition this term against MK Dons and Arsenal and netted in the penalty shootout of the victory against the Gunners at Anfield.

The 19-year-old was expected to be one of the most experienced members of the side that takes to the pitch in the Midlands on Tuesday evening.

However Under-23 manager Neil Critchley, who filled in for Jurgen Klopp in Monday’s pre-match press conference, said Brewster is doubtful for the game.

Critchley said: “He's got a knock so he's doubtful. We are assessing him today. Fingers crossed he makes it.

"On his ankle in training. Don't want to say too much because hopefully he makes it.”

An inexperienced team is certain at Villa Park given the European champions’ participation in the Club World Cup in Qatar this week.

Liverpool play Monterrey in the semi-final on the tournament on Wednesday less than 24 hours after the game at Villa.

Neco Williams and Curtis Jones are already in Qatar with their senior counter-parts and a number of others will fly out to Doha to join up with them directly from Villa Park after the match.
