RFU 'optimistic' England fans can attend autumn Tests at Twickenham after new ruling

RFU chief Bill Sweeney is “quite optimistic” England could play their autumn internationals at Twickenham in front of fans.

England are due to play four Tests in November — against New Zealand, Argentina, Tonga and Australia.

The Government announced on Tuesday that from July 4 in England a “one metre-plus” rule would be introduced for social distancing — and that has given the RFU hope of having fans at games this year.

“It makes a massive difference to Twickenham,” chief executive Sweeney told the BBC.

“When you go from two metre to one metre, it is not halving, it’s actually a fourfold effect.

“So, if you are two metres we would probably get 9,000 fans in the stadium, and if you are at one metre we think we will get somewhere in the region of 35,000 fans there.

“I think the way things are going, we are quite optimistic that, should the games go ahead, that we will be able to see reasonable crowds there.”
